Residency open call for artists based in Barcelona (metropolitan area)

The Barcelona to Hong Kong Exchange Programme is nProjekt’s initiative to promote cultural exchange and artistic collaboration between Barcelona-based media artists and the vibrant art scene in Hong Kong. The programme will provide a selected artist with a unique opportunity to present a series of artworks alongside local Hong Kong artists, immerse themselves in a unique Asian environment and develop their artistic practice within a specific cultural context. Presented by nProjekt, with Barcelona partner Tangent Projects, local venue collaborators Floating Projects and Pointsman Artspace, and supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, this exchange aims to promote cross-cultural dialogue and innovation in media arts.
Who Can Apply
The Barcelona to Hong Kong Exchange Programme is open to all Barcelona metropolitan area-based media artists, regardless of nationality, age or stage of career. Preference will be given to artists who do not require a visa for short-term visits to Hong Kong, in accordance with the Hong Kong Immigration Department's guidelines. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively in English and should demonstrate a commitment to innovative and experimental artistic practice. This opportunity is not currently available to artist collectives or collaborative teams.
What the Programme Offers
The Barcelona to Hong Kong Exchange Programme offers the selected artist a support package, including:
- An honourarium of HKD 10,000.
- A one-month stay in Hong Kong, including accommodation and international travel (economy class).
- A daily allowance of HKD 100 for up to 30 days.
- A production budget of up to HKD 30,000 to cover all costs associated with the proposed exhibition of a series of 3-5 artworks, such as materials, artwork transport, equipment hire and professional support.
- Curatorial guidance and production support from nProjekt.
- An exhibition opportunity at an artist-run space in Hong Kong to showcase the artist's work alongside local artists in a 2-3 week non-solo exhibition.
- Installation and dismantling support
Residency Demands
The selected artist will be expected to engage fully with the exchange programme, which will include:
- Showcasing a series of 3-5 existing or ongoing artworks for the exhibition in a space of 400-500 sq ft.
- Participating in all promotional and community activities related to the residency and exhibition.
- Demonstrating a high level of self-reliance and initiative, as the residency operates with limited administrative resources.
- Ensuring that their proposed artworks are feasible for travel and installation in the provided exhibition space.
- Communicating effectively in English.
What to Expect
Participants can expect an enriching experience that combines professional development with cultural immersion. The residency provides access to an artist-run space in the heart of Hong Kong, basic facilities and AV equipment. Artists will have the opportunity to engage with the local arts community, exchange with another artist in residence from Buenos Aires, participate in various cultural events and explore the diverse artistic landscape of Hong Kong. The residency is scheduled for November 2024, a culturally vibrant month that offers a rich social and artistic environment as well as good weather.
What Non-Solo Exhibition the Selected Artist Will Participate In
The Non-Solo series began in 2021, featuring local artists in Hong Kong during the pandemic and travelling to other countries from 2024. The featured artist shows a series of recent works as in a solo, while a few guest artists join in with a work from a different medium, related in theme, concept, approach, material, medium or sensibility. It's like two curated exhibitions combined into one. For the Non-Local Non-Solo series of this exchange programme, the featured artist will be the incoming foreign artist presenting the proposed series. The local guest artist will be invited after the artist and the theme of the exhibition are confirmed.
Application Process
To apply, interested artists must submit their applications as a single pdf (within 5mb) between 15 July and 15 August. The application must include:
1. A motivation statement (maximum 1000 characters).
2. A short bio and CV (maximum 1 page).
3. A portfolio with examples of previous work (up to 5 images with details).
4. Proposed artworks (existing or work-in-progress) for the Hong Kong exhibition (3-5 pieces, with images of details, installation view, technical details and a name for the series).
5. An artist's statement about the series (maximum 1000 characters).
6. Budget breakdown including but not limited to: production/fabrication, equipment rental, materials, professional/technical support, assistants, shipping, and insurance (maximum HKD 30,000)
7. List of equipment & technical requirements (both to bring and to hire).
Applications must be submitted by email to non.local.non.solo@gmail.com (subject line: Barcelona to Hong Kong Exchange Programme) with a single 5MB maximum PDF file (file name format: Barcelona_yourlastname_seriesname) containing all required sections and images.
