Under•Line
Under•Line is a travelling exhibition project debuted in 2018. The Hong Kong debut edition was the first attempt to explore the limits of each participating artist. Flexibility, adaptability, or inclusivity were the main elements to have experimented with. Through utilising the common site of a residential apartment-converted gallery – ACO Art Space, six artists delved into interpretations of territory, possession, intermediation, intervention, and instruction, in their home city of myriad meanings and psyches.
The original five sets of expandable works were re-installed with notable changes, with a freshly joined member, in The Hagen edition. The exhibition oriented towards an alternative direction, by landing itself at the bakery factory-converted Quartair gallery, a space with different light, scale, temperature and materiality, as well as through the incorporation of a new set of artwork by the curator. To further explore the relationship between each artist and this specific site, Meet-the-Artist-at-Work sessions were carried out for artists to further internalise qualities of the space into their works and practices.
The first outdoor experiment in Tokyo encouraged a smaller team to explore the garden of House of Ebata. The mud, the water, the sunshine, lots of bugs and greens has given a unique character to the exhibition. It was also inspiring experimentation for the group of artists that grew up in the sub-tropics, through a six-month attempt, to tightly embrace the artificial aliens morphed from their drawings, sculptures and installations exposing directly under the sky.
More new artists joined the edition in Rotterdam. When seven sets of brand new artworks were created and installed in the two ground floors of residential house-converted Wolfart Projectspace and WOLk, performances extended to the front street and the backyard. In this neighbourhood with tens of local artists and designers reside, more conversations became possible, as people also come to the same locations for food and yoga.
The edition in Sydney was the first one in the series with a soundtrack. Sounds of Hong Kong played nonstop in 107 at Redfern, an art centre truly created for diversity and inclusion. All kinds of people in the neighbourhood could stop by for a drink, a show, or just a rest. Deliberately kept the artworks minimal in this edition, sound and video projections were allowed to fly around and set a tone for the space.
Under•Line (Electric edition) at Grotto SKW set a new start for the project in 2022, before its journey to Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder at Trondheim, Norway. In September, the series continued its expeditions to Barcelona presenting in Tangent Projects, and to Lisbon in November, as one of the exhibitions in Lisbon Art Weekend at PADA gallery.
